Just wanted to update you and let you know that I ordered my Mac yesterday – I got the Macbook Pro 13 inch, with the 500gb harddrive. I also got the one on one service from Apple. I’m just waiting for it to arrive – late this week or early next week. Thanks for the help.

Oh, also Apple offers quite a few workshops for free at the Apple store, I attended the “Why You’ll Love A Mac” and any doubts I had about getting it quickly melted away. Anyone thinking about getting a Mac product should take a look on the website and see if they have a workshop. But they should probably make sure they can afford whatever they’re going for a workshop for, I have not doubt they’ll get sucked in.

My thoughts on Apple news about the new MacBook Air Storage on SSD. 2nd Gen iPads, iPhone 5, & iPod Touch models should have SSD at least 128+ gigs. I shouldn’t have to decide what I want to take with me. I need the storage space of a iPod Classic but want the apps and features of an iPod Touch. I have a 60 gig iPod 5th gen full of just music, podcasts, and audio books, no room for the videos/tv eps/movies much less books & apps. Until we can stream our personal libraries (of music, videos, books) to our devices anywhere we have to have on-board storage. If you can fit 256 Gigs in .68 inches you should be able to fit in any of the iOS devices.

BlueHost CEO Says Bye Bye To Microsoft:
About 4 years ago I switched all my desktop use to Mac OSX. I love it. And although I believe it is superior to Windows in almost every way (Especially the MACH Kernel) I didn’t really care what we used at Bluehost/Hostmonster/Fastdomain for our office/support computers.

Those days of ignorant bliss are now totally gone. We literally can no longer tolerate Windows in our corporate network. What you say? I know this sounds strange as corporate America is a stalwart Windows using market, but I’ll say it again. We can’t tolerate Windows anymore. It is simply too high a risk. It is UNSECURABLE.

Now I know right now that there are going to be lots of readers that write back saying, “If you know what you are doing then Windows is easy to secure. Only people that aren’t technical enough to do things right get infected.” Uh huh. There are so many zero day vulnerabilities with Windows that I simply can’t keep our network secure. In addition, because of the type of business we are in we are constantly the target of malicious activity directed at our network. We have to protect ourselves, and running Windows feels like bringing a plastic knife to gun fight when it comes to security.

I’m not saying Linux, and Mac OSX aren’t susceptible to viruses or malware, but its so much less that its not even close. Its strange to me that most businesses just accept the fact that their machines will be infected with Malware and that they will just clean it off with the latest scan of their computer. Are you ok with your passwords, personal data, and financial information just flowing out to owners of various botnets? Are you fine to have an army of your office machines sending out spam in the background all day long while you wonder why your internet connection is slow? Clearly the answer for most businesses is yes. I guess after 20 years of Microsoft usage most people are just beaten into submission that computing has to be this way – but it doesn’t have to be. There are alternatives, and we are using them. I hope many of you reading today will consider some of the alternatives.Matt Heaton

Next Apple Event Goes “Back to the Mac”
Following recent events focused on iOS, the iPhone and the iPod and iTunes, Apple’s next media event will shift its focus “Back to the Mac.”The event will be held on October 20, 2010 in Cupertino. As you can see from the invitation, not only does it look like new laptops might be announced at the event (hence the aluminum looking facade), but we might just get a preview of the next version of Mac OS X.

Sparrow Google Mail App:
Cliff learned about Sparrow Google Mail App from Erik Fisher. This is a desktop mail client for the Mac. Using web based mail was a bit of a pain when you simply wanted to click on an email hyperlink only to have it pull up the default Apple mail client that had never been configured. Setting up Sparrow is a total breeze and it supports multiple Google Email Accounts.

Windows Phone 7 Syncing for Mac Coming Later This Year
Sometime in 2010, Mac users will get the ability to sync Windows Phone 7 devices with their Mac computer.Microsoft UK’s head of Windows Phone marketing, Oded Ran, first tweeted that WP7/Zune syncing with Mac is coming “soon”, with Microsoft later confirming it’ll happen this year.

In this episode, Cliff rants about how he thought for sure that Apple’s Pages users would not be plagued by the same backwards compatability issues as MS Word Users. However, this week, when a client sent Cliff a document, he received a warning messaging saying “You need a newer version of Pages to view this document.” To make things worse, he was able to open in preview and then do a screen cap to get the important information he needed.

Cliff and Chris discussed the new announcement made by RIM about the Blackberry Playbook. Until we see this in action, we put this in the vaporware category along with all the other tablet computers that have been talked about so much, but never seen in the wild.

We also talked about the fact that the Apple TV is apparently jail breakable, it contains 8 gigs of memory, and can run apps if Apple (or the Jailbroken Community) decides to flip the switch to make it a reality.

Numbers, now at version 1.2, introduces improved exports, object grouping and ungrouping, and better hyperlinks, among other new features. Pages, also updated to version 1.2, provides WebDAV and MobileMe iDisk support, txt file compatibility, and many performance enhancements. The third member of the iWork family, Keynote, has added new animations, the ability to group and animate objects, and export to PowerPoint.

In this episode, Chris and I talk about long process of trying to reserve or pre-order the new iPhone 4 due to the fact that more than 600,000 people had been trying to place an order. We also share that the pre-order stock for iPhone 4 delivers were SOLD OUT by the end of the day. The only hope of getting an iPhone 4 at this time, if you didn’t pre-order or reserve your store pick up in time would be to camp out at the local Apple Store the night before launch.

Also in this episode, we share some of our feelings about the Android operating system and how carriers can keep you from upgrading to the latest software version without first getting their approval, and after it’s been loaded down with their software on top of it.

We took a call from John who asked about getting a keyboard shortcut for turning off the wifi on a Mac. We didn’t have a solution for this. However, if you know of a piece of software that would allow this, would you call us at 859-795-4067 and leave us feedback with some insights on how this can be done?

Also, we suggested that John sell his used iPhone 3GS on CraigsList instead of another service in order to get a much higher resell price from it.

We wrapped the show by being fair and balanced and giving some benefits of having the new Sprint Evo smart phone. However, our recommendation to Matt Anderson is that he should go with an iPhone for his first entry into the smart phone market.

In This Episode, Chris and Cliff celebrate the 100th episode of this podcast. We also discuss the following items.

Apple buys LALA: The Wall Street Journal and the NY Times are both confirming that Apple has pulled the trigger and spent a minuscule fraction of those billions in cash on Lala. No numbers were announced, but the WSJ notes that an investment of $20 million in Lala from Warner Music Group was written down by more than 50% earlier this year.

Why Lala for Apple? The AP noted that Lala co-founder Bill Nguyen demoed an iPhone app in October thatallowed ‘intelligently cached’ songs to be streamed to your iPhone, with therecently-streamed songs replayable even outside of cell coverage areas; Wired suggests that Lala’s bundle-payment setup, where users buy stream credits, could save Apple’s iTunes Store millions in credit card fulfillment charges. The deal is expected to put Nguyen and the Lala engineers on Apple’s payroll, although the Times notes that Lala’s agreements with the labels to stream music are non-transferable.

Google Chrome for Mac Released! Google released a beta of their Chrome browser for the Mac, nearly 14 months after the Windows version. Chrome is built on the WebKit engine, just like Safari. I’ve only used it briefly (I’m writing this post with it now), yet a couple of things are immediately apparent.

First is the lack of a search box. Instead, Google has built the “Omnibox,” which combines the search and address field. Begin typing and a list of results appears beneath the text field, including recent browsing history, search options and more. For a complete view, browse all of the results in a new tab. That’s neat, but it’ll take some getting used to.

When first launched, it offered to import my Safari bookmarks; a task it completed so quickly I thought there was an error. Tabs slide in and out of view and are smart enough (supposedly, I haven’t tested this) to isolate crashes and keep them from bringing the whole browser down.

uStream Live Broadcaster is released! Ustream is offering a free app [iTunes link] that lets you put a live or recorded stream on the web that multiple people can watch from a web browser.

This is a rather stunning turnaround from just weeks ago when Apple did not allow any live streaming of video from the iPhone. This app supports the 3G and 3GS iPhones, and allows streaming over the 3G network and Wi-Fi. You can record the stream to your iPhone for a later upload, and it even works on 3G phones that don’t have built-in video record capability.

The app allows you to share your recorded stream on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook and of course the Ustream site. You can relay your GPS location and your URL appears in the video so you can tell your friends how to find you. Finally, you can archive your broadcast to the web for later viewing.

To get it all going you must create a free account. I tried it this morning, and it worked on both 3G and Wi-Fi. Video resolution is 320 x 240 pixels, and can be lowered to 176 x 144

Mac Mini’s and iMac Refresh coming? Apple Insider posted earlier that Apple notified retailers that their Mac mini orders will not be filled at the moment — but soon. A later update states that the low-end Mac mini has been discontinued entirely, leaving us to believe that we’ll be seeing a hardware upgrade shortly. Several of our tipsters work for Apple Authorized re-sellers who are running very low on desktop supplies, even an Apple Store tip says they have 4 iMacs in stock.

Users of Tweetie, the popular Twitter client for both Mac and iPhone, have reason to be excited: a new version of the iPhone app, Tweetie 2, is confirmed to be on the way. Not a free upgrade however, it will cost $2.99

Apple says 30% call failure is normal: An iPhone user aggravated with an unacceptably high rate of dropped calls on his iPhone, took it to a New York City Apple Store to have it checked for issues. The call dump statistics revealed a 22% drop rate on calls, which most of us would call “wicked awful” — but not Apple and AT&T. No, in this particular case the Genius told our hapless iPhone owner that he should count himself lucky, as Apple’s baseline stat for dropped calls in NYC is a blistering thirty percent. Yes, almost one in three calls on an iPhone in the Big Apple will end with frustration, and that’s just OK with everyone.
