Welcome To The Pursuing A Balanced Life Podcast!

Pursuing A Balanced Life PodcastPursuing A Balanced Life was originally launched in March of 2006. When it started, I (Cliff Ravenscraft), worked as an independent insurance agent, in a family run insurance agency, and had only been podcasting as a hobby for a few short months. In January 2008, I left my career in insurance, after 11 years, to pursue podcasting as my full-time career.

This podcast has served as an audio journal that has chronicled everything that led to my decision to leave my career in insurance and to start my own online business. This podcast contains the most exhaustive account of all the things that I have learned about building my own business and how I’ve managed to balance all the demands that come along with being an entrepreneur.

I invite you to subscribe and join me as I continue to share all the business and success principles that I learn along the way as well as my pursuit of finding a balance between my focus on my career, my desire to be a great husband and father, my desire to become more physically fit and healthy, and my desire to live a life of faith.

If you like this show, you may also like the Podcast Answer Man or Family From The Heart podcasts. Of course we invite you to please check out the complete list of our podcasts.

In this longer episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share what I’ve been doing to get prepared for our family’s two week European Vacation. I talk about content production for Podcast Answer Man. I talk about the financial ramifications of intentionally putting most of my business pursuits on the back burner to place an extreme focus on the area of health and fitness in 2015. I, then, wrap up the episode by answer John Budd’s question about the type of bike that I purchased, the bike seat that I use, and the gear recommended to go with your bike.

I mention the Global Cycling Network YouTube Channel. Below are some of my favorite episodes.

  • How To Fix A Flat Tyre – Fix A Road Bike Puncture
  • The 5 Minute Bike Wash – How To Clean Your Bike In A Hurry
  • How To Reduce The Risk Of Getting Punctures
  • How To Ride In A Group – Group Riding Etiquette
  • No More Inner Tubes? How To Get Home

In this episode, I share the story who how my best cycling experience to date was following by my worst cycling experience to date. These experiences were only one day apart from each other. The good news is that I simply can’t wait to head out for my next ride.

Also in this episode, I share two audiobook recommendations and give a lot of shoutouts to those who have been using the #TrainWithCliff hashtag.

In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share something that is not easy to share. This week, I received an email from a client who had already spent nearly $2,000 with me and who had already communicated that he had every intention on spending at least another $2,000 with me within the next few weeks.

The subject of this email was to let me know how disappointed he was by that fact that I was not willing to make myself available to answer all of the “quick questions” that he had related to the setup of his podcast.

It’s important to note that I had clearly communicated my limitations on accessibility (or boundaries) before he ever spent a single dollar with me and, also, that he stated that he understood and respected my expressed limitations of availability prior to my May 25th session of Podcasting A to Z.

This email me caused me to evaluate, or even question, the boundaries that I had put in place and communicated to this client. This morning, I took a great deal of time to review every email interaction that I have had with this client since the beginning of this year. Upon my review, I’m confident that I had made the right decision. With that being said, it is very possible that my setting and protecting the boundaries that I have communicated may have cost me a paying customer in this situation. However, if I had this entire situation to do over again, given the same circumstances, I would not have changed any of my responses.

I share this story in spite of the fact that it may seem to negatively reflect on my desire to serve my clients by any means necessary. In fact, for the first six years of my business, I would have done just about anything to make this client happy. However, while not setting and protecting boundaries had served my clients and my business well, it caused me to sacrifice a great deal in the area of time spent with my family and focusing on my own personal fitness and health.

It’s not often when someone pushes back on your boundaries. In fact, most people really do understand and respect them. However, it’s never easy to have a paying customer who communicates that they feel that you have let them down.

If you are interested in hearing the full story, please have a listen to this episode.

In this special episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share a conversation that I had with my friend, Dr. Clark Gaither (ClarkGaither.com). Dr. Gaither is a board certified family physician who has been in the full time practice of medicine for the past 22 years.

Recently, Dr. Gaither and I had an email conversation about all the medical benefits that come along with all the work that I’ve been putting into my daily, high intensity, aerobic exercise. Since the health benefits of exercise is what motivates me the most, I thought I’d invite Dr. Gaither to share some of what he wrote to me in his email.

Also, in this episode, I share something, for the very first time, that I have been working on behind the scenes. I now have an official, custom, theme song that has been written and produced for the Pursuing A Balanced Life podcast. Special thanks to Todd & Emily Marriott from Gifty Song for the hard work into coming up with the perfect song the communicates the essence of what this podcast is about. Stephanie and I just returned from a seven day pleasure cruise, aboard the Celebrity Silhouette, with folks from Dan Miller’s 48 Days community. If you have ever been on a cruise before, you know that the culture is one of laying back, relaxing and enjoying entertainment and an unlimited amount of food.

It’s not uncommon for folks to gain as much as one pound per day on a cruise. Most people are prepared for the fact that they are going to gain a few extra pounds during their trip. However, I was determined that I would not only not gain weight while on the cruise, but that I would actually lose weight with my continued commitment to my healthy lifestyle.

In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share the decisions that I made during my week on the cruise ship as it relates to exercise and food choices. At the end of the episode, I reveal the result from stepping on the scale upon my return.

Don’t let the well meaning, yet unsolicited, advice of others discourage you when you are making such great progress.

They will often tell you what you are doing is great, but how you can do much better by following their advice. Some will tell you what you are doing is wrong and tell you what you should do instead.

Here is some of the most common, yet unsolicited, advice that I have received in the past two months… “Don’t eat eggs, don’t eat wheat, don’t eat sugar, don’t eat fat, don’t eat meat”, etc etc etc. I’m pretty sure that if you were to only juice organic tree bark, you would still have someone telling you that you’re doing it wrong.

Here’s my advice… Start somewhere. Make a lifelong commitment to a single change. As long as you are doing better today than you were before, celebrate that and take it to the next level at your own pace.
