In this episode of Social Media Serenity, I am joined by Justin Lukasavige from http://CoachRadio.tv. Justin is a great friend and has a lot of valuable insights when it comes to how Social Media can help us in our business.

Justin and I talk about how we think businesses can benefit by using Social Media. We talked about Creating an outpost on services like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Online formums, etc.

Once we have found the outposts that work for us, we create content that is valuable, both in the existing community and on our own blog/home base. Content can include blog posts, videos, audio podcasts, or simply ongoing conversations where we are helping people.

When interacting with people in social media, we have found that the following has been most beneficial to us in our business interactions. We spend about two hours a day, not all at once in the following way. About 25% of our time is for monitoring (reading blogs, google alerts, twitter search). About 25% of our time is for creating content. About 50% of our time is for commenting and talking to people (leaving comments, promoting other people).

Facebook Temporary Passwords:
Facebook has released a new feature to help users protect their accounts when they log into public computers: one-time passwords.The feature is simple: users that want to use a public computer but don’t want to risk using their sensitive passwords on it can text “opt” to 32665. If their phone is linked to their Facebook account, they’ll be texted back a temporary password that can only be used once and expires in 20 minutes.

This is a Plus Member Episode.

The Social Network film on Facebook, Cliff has seen it two and ½ times (last 25 minutes). He loved it! Took Stephanie. Not family friendly at all. Do NOT take your kids. There is sex, drugs, wayout college life in this movie!

The FICTIONAL story of founding Facebook. One scene where Cliff wanted to stand up and cheer.

Eric has not seen it yet. Zuckerberg has seen it. He didn’t rate the film, but talked about what kind of effect it could have on Facebook.

Jeff Jarvis says the movie is anti geek, anti entrepreneurial. Cliff disagrees.

Cliff was geeking out through the whole movie! Cliff is anti-social?!?!

The other big thing is the money issue. How are we going to monetize this thing? It starts as a hobby.

All along with GSPN, Cliff has been approached to do this and that. He has had ONE person tell him he was stupid to do what he did by leaving his job.

Cliff thinks there’s a lot of valuable stuff in the book, Accidental Millionaire and the film. He totally resonated with it! He thought it was inspirational.

1. Can download data; Now you can get it out. It’s pretty convenient to be able to download your stuff and back it up if you want to.

Cliff probably won’t want to; but some people are putting 100+ photos a week on FB.
FB doesn’t own everyone’s content. CR doesn’t think it speaks to the privacy at all.
Eric says it will give you the feel of more control over your account.

2. That they have a new dashboard (inside privacy settings, what apps have what permissions on your account, as well as restrict apps from your participation)

Is it active now? May not be released yet.

It’s internal settings. It’s always a good idea to look at them.

3. New Groups
Eric says Hmmm… Is this close enough to a Ning replacement? Cliff says their terms of service change so often, all of his intellectual property, that you are charging money for. Ning is better.

Eric reads Group announcement.

Added a bunch of new features to groups including Group Chat. You can use Groups for emails too. Emails turn into posts by default.

Cliff thinks it replaces Yahoo and Google Groups. More closely resembles LinkedIn Groups.

Create a group, decide who you want in. Built on FB (500 million strong).

Cool interactive tool.

Old group interface is there, but old groups still work. Old groups offered no notifications.
New Groups active today. Hopefully, new groups does notifications.

Cliff has GSPN Fanbook FacePage. Social Serenity; wants personal account. GSPN Forum is where
CR has control over his content. He gets notifications.

Eric says new FB Groups would have a family training area. A walled garden to learn. Facebook
with training wheels.

New Twitter.com interface:

Cliff finally got it. One of the things he noticed that he can’t do that he could before: he asks a
question, He could hit Reply on Eric; hit Reply next theRamenNoodle; hit reply next to whoever;
That functionality is gone.

Cliff: Biggest concern is how complicated it is now for new users. Before, all I’d have to do was
say just go to twitter.com and follow GSPN, etc. Not so now. Overwhelming. Moving away
from simplicity.

Google Wave

In this episode, We mix things up a bit. Erik needed to take the week off, so my friend and co-host of the Help I Got A Mac Podcast, Chris Beiting joined me. We talk about the release of the first 100,000 invites to Google Wave.

By now, I’m sure you have heard about Google Wave. I got excited about this project as soon as I first saw the developer conference demo back in June of this year.

The only issue with that original video was that it was more than an hour long. Personally, I felt that it was worth every moment I spent soaking in all that Google Wave could do. However, the length of the video was a barrier to entry for the mass audience to get a feel for what would be coming from this service.

Finally, there is a much shorter video. In fact, here’s a video that does pretty darn well at explaining the main points in under eight minutes. Have a look:

The first round of Google Wave invites just started to roll out this week. Those who are lucky enough to get an invite in the first round will have the opportunity to “nominate” a few friends for the next round of invites.

I suppose that they did this due to the fact that Google Wave without anyone to interact with would be the same as if you signed up for a Twitter Account and didn’t know anyone else that uses Twitter.

Due to the amount of hype surrounding Google Wave, I’m concerned about people feeling let down at first glance when they finally get to use the service for the first time. This is exactly what happened with Twitter.

However, I feel that in about a year or so, Google Wave’s popularity will rank up their with both Facebook and Twitter.

Looking at the video above, I’m most excited about the “Bloggy”. (Jump to 3min 12sec into the video embedded above). As a podcaster / blogger / online community builder, I’m most interested in the ability for me to embed waves in various sites that I manage.

At this time, I sometimes post the same content in many different venues. For example, I will post an episode of Podcast Answer Man podcast episodes here on this site, the gspn.tv main site and the premium, plus member only site that I manage for gspn.tv. Each post on each site has it’s own comments section, none of them connected to each other.

I can envision the ability to use something like this bloggy feature to embed into each of these posts and turning off the individual comments sections. So basically, the google wave for comments would be right inside my show notes page. This way, if you are a gspn.tv plus member and viewing the show notes on that page… let’s say you add a comment there. Your comment will also show up on the main gspn.tv site as well as on this Podcast Answer Man site. Actually, I could even try to add it to the gspn.tv Community Forum somehow.

This is just the beginning of what I think Google Wave will be able to do for me as a Podcaster. It may take a while for this one to catch on. But I do expect that we are “riding the wave” of the “next big thing.”

This Week In Facebook

Is Facebook getting Voice Chat? Personally, I don’t think so. It seems it’s just another application. I wouldn’t get excited unless I see an official app that goes on everyone’s service like chat did!

In this episode, Erik Fisher and myself, Cliff Ravenscraft, explain our reasoning for starting this podcast and share our thoughts on what we will be discussed moving forward.

Erik and I both share that our top social media sites/services that we use are Twitter and Facebook.

In the discussion, we discussed the Twitter Facebook Application and the Selective Twitter Status Application. Also, we made mention of Ping.fm and Hellotxt.com for the ability of posting your status updates to all the social networks

We also mentioned the use of Google Reader. In the discussion of what RSS feeds are, we referenced a video called RSS In Plain English.

Update 07/18/2009: Wayne Henderson sent me a Twitter message asking how to set up ping.fm to work within Tweetie iPhone application. I actually used my wife’s new iPhone 3GS to record this video tutorial on just how to do that.
