Well my friends, with a great deal of thought and prayer going into this, we have made the decision to end the Business Tech Weekly podcast after 109 episodes. This show was started on September 8th, 2009. During this final episode, Andy and I share how we met and what led to the creation of this show.

We also shared how Andy and I have benefited tremendously from knowing each other. As you will hear in the show, Andy and I will be working on some projects together in the future. It’s just that both of us lost all passion for discussion technology tools for small to medium sized businesses about forty or so episodes ago.

• Great for handling affiliate payments b/c they get paid instantly through PayPal
• Cost is 5% of transaction and .50 cents for each transaction.
• Does discount codes very well
• Hosted download option – at no extra charge.
• Create quick access link for free downloads to a specific email address

I mentioned that my main concern is that the only method of payment that he sees is PayPal. Yes, it does offer credit card processing through the PayPal shopping cart as an option, but I have had experience where people are known to abandon a shopping cart when faced with any sort of PayPal login screen. E-Junkie allows you to bring direct credit card processing through either PayPal’s Website Payments Pro or your Authorize.net account if you have one.

The Suite is a bundle of our four 37 Signals apps: Basecamp, Highrise, Backpack, and Campfire for one low price (starting at $99/month).

For the initial release of the 37signals Suite, they targeted three key customer requests:
Big savings over purchasing each app separately. Basically you get four for the price of just about two. Depending on which apps you have, and which plans you are currently on, the savings can be significant.
Simplified billing. Instead of getting charged separately for multiple apps, you’ll get a single charge from us on your credit card every month. You can update your credit card, upgrade your plan, downgrade your plan, or cancel all from one screen as well.
Unified users across all your apps. Before the Suite, if you had Basecamp and Highrise, you’d have to create the same users in multiple apps. That was a pain. The Suite shares uses across all the apps. You can create and manage all your users across all your apps from a single screen.

I, Cliff, haven not yet tried Basecamp yet. I think I’ll wait until client data is shared between the apps. I don’t to have to re enter email address, etc, into Basecamp.

Cliff’s Initial Thoughts On Priority Inbox:
I like that priority inbox gives you three levels to your inbox. Top Level equals your highest priority emails to respond to. The Middle Level shows you your starred items. I love the starred items actually showing up in the inbox but separate from the rest of the emails. The Lower Level shows all your other messages.

One major issue that bugs me about the default setting is if I actually read a message in my priority inbox and don’t respond immediately, it puts it down in my “all other” inbox. I want it to stay at the top until I respond to it. Thankfully there is a setting to change it so it will keep all important emails at the top.

After about an hour of using Priority Inbox, I went in and turned it off. It was messing with my inbox count and I try to maintain a very low amount of emails in my inbox anyway. I will miss the feature of seeing the starred items, but I would have preferred those be at the bottom of the list anyway. I can see myself turning on the Priority Inbox in the future, if I get more than 50 emails behind.

The Client Comes First?:
Should the client come first? When is it appropriate to put yourself before the needs of your client or to put off meeting their needs till the next day or so?

I was logging into GoTo Meeting the other day and saw an announcement on their page that they are bringing video conferencing to GoTo Meeting. Do other services do this already? Sure. They both said that if XMarks were willing to ask its users to pay a small annual fee for the service, they would both do so in a heartbeat.

Have external audio input allows for you to take the audio quality of your video to the next level. In the episode, both Cliff and Andy refer to episode 134 of the Podcast Answer Man podcast.

Cliff pointed out that a 30 minute video of this quality can take as much as 5 to 7 hours from the beginning of the project to where you are able to embed the video on your site and release an iPhone version into an rss feed.

In the course of nine hours, Cliff is able to produce a total of 11 episodes of highly professional sounding audio content on a variety of different topics. Also, audio is a great deal portable for those who wish to consume your content while driving or out for an afternoon jog.

In the episode, there were discussions about the various options for putting your video online. When it comes down to it, the important thing is that you simply put your content out there for people to consume.

Some valuable take away points are as follows:
1. Avoid paralysis by analysis – don’t wait for perfect
2. If it’s really bad…keep practicing till it’s at least presentable.
3. Great content will make up for lacking video professionalism.
4. Be a thought leader – If you do it first or say it first, that will help you have greater impact.

o Written by developers in Estonia and got its name for Sky peer to peer and then Skyper and then b/c of domain name availability (See BTW epidisode #1 for more on that topic) chose Skype
o eBay bought it for 2.6B in 2006, valued it at 1.7B in April of this year but then sold 65% of it for 1.9B, which makes it worth 2.9B just a few mths ago.
o Skype is threatened b/c of a lawsuit from it’s originators – http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/aug/01/ebay-case-threatens-skype-shutdown – “Millions of internet users who use Skype could be forced to find other ways to make phone calls after parent company eBay said it did not own the underlying technology that powers the service, prompting fears of a shutdown.”
o Skype made eBay over $600M in the last year and has over 480 million registered users. Skype is adding about 30 million subscribers a quarter. They’d have to settle the dispute or find new technology for the software to work.

o Skype allows users to make calls over the internet for free anywhere in the world.

* Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at www.penisland.net. When you put the words Pen and Island together, it looks like PenisLand.net

* One of the funniest domains is from a group of designers, and their whacky website Speed of Art.com. Though it looks more like SpeedoFart.com

* Does your domain name communicates professionalism?

* If you have an address that ends with .blogger.com, .wordpress.com or anything other than yourbusiness.com then you really don’t have a business, you have a hobby. Thing is, most people can’t make a living with a hobby.

* Where do we buy our domains?

* GoDaddy – Price has gone up but coupons are always available via Google, Price is currently $10.69 for .com domains. Coupons are easy to find. Sometimes they run coupons for renewals as well

* Your Host – Often you’ll get a free domain when you purchase hosting for your web site. You’ll likely have to pay for renewals in the future

* What domain extensions should I purchase? Andy suggests your personal name in .com/.net/.org. Your business’ name. Your family’s names.

* What extras do I need to get when I buy a domain? We usually don’t buy any extras.

* Shapes and Sizes of URL’s?

* Short URL’s can be very catchy. Though they can be very hard to find quality ones b/c many of them are taken already.

- Long is good b/c it’s not confusing and you can communicate your business title clearly. PodcastAnswerMan.com – (Always capitalize the first letter of each word – increases readability considerably, especially if a letter repeats like MoreProfitTechnology.com.

* Hyphenate or not Hyphenate? Avoid punctuation in URL’s b/c it makes is very hard to spell/remember the address

* Numbers in my URL? Avoid using numbers or even having people spell them because it just gets too confusing.
