121 About The Church – Not Going To church Anymore!

in Encouraging Others Through Christ

In this episode, I share some pretty shocking information related to my journey of faith and where I stand on my relationship with “the church.” However, it is really difficult for me to actually state the decision that our family has recently made. The reason is because the statement is that our family has decided that “we are not going to church anymore.” However, it really depends on how you “define” the word “church” and what you mean when you say “going to church.”

Honestly, right now, I would argue that nobody really “goes to church.” The gathering of those who follow Christ “ARE” the church. Church is a reality that happens when believers gather together, it is not a location.

However, I really don't want to write a blog post about this at all. So I am going to simply ask you to take a listen to this episode if you want to learn more. There will certainly be more episodes of About The Church to follow.

So You Don't Want To Go To Church AnymoreIf you have any interest in checking out the book that has helped me to see what God has been speaking to my heart as of late, I encourage you to check it out.

The book is titled “So You Don't Want To Go To Church Anymore.” If this book is on our featured page at http://Mardel.com/gspn, please consider buying it there using promo code “GSPN” in the shopping cart. However, if you are not able to find the book on that page or if you looking to get the book for your Kindle, please go to http://gspn.tv/gotochurch.

As I said, there will be more episodes of the About The Church podcast coming soon. I promise you that I am not abandoning my faith. In fact, I plan to be a much greater participant within “the church” (aka the body of Christ) than I've ever been before.

In this episode, I did share something about Steve Brown and the Scandalous Freedom podcast that I've been listening to. I highly encourage you to CLICK HERE to check it out.

  • Wow! Awesome.  I will be ordering the book myself.  I knew I couldn’t be the only person feeling like this.  I am glad to hear your story.  It is similar to mine.  I’m downloading your past podcasts to get more encouragement.  I was going to start a blog and podcast about my journey, but I might just send people here.

  • You ARE NOT alone Eric. I am so encouraged that you felt connected to what I am sharing. Obviously this “book” is not the “answer” to our issues. However, it is my prayer that God will use this book as a means to help you more clearly understand how you can be 100% free within his love for you. I’d love to hear more feedback from you after you have read the book.

  • This is amazing Cliff. It’s hard to put into words, but my journey and the Spirit’s involvement have led me to a greater love for the true “church”, the body, the people. Obviously those people can be found in the church buildings all over the world, but it’s so much bigger than that!

  • Evan, I have been 100% CONSUMED by God’s love for me ever since I’ve excepted his FULL MERCY for me and have broken free from the chains of religion.  I am so eager to share so much more that God has laid on my heart.  I’m praying for what God is doing in your heart through the journey you are on right now.  Trust me when I say that God is pursuing you, loves you, and is using you to impact others!

  • Emily

Cliff, I know you’re in KY and I’m in TX, but could we have possibly gone to the same church, LOL?

We might not be going to church if we hadn’t found the small congregation we attend now. Our pastor says things like, “My job is to teach myself out of a job!” and, “Church is BORING! God is bored with church!”

And as different as this body is, our pastor still says/has things in place that scream “tradition” and “blindspot.”

I could say a lot more, but I’ll refrain because otherwise I’ll end up writing a novella.

  • Emily, I am so thankful that you have found believers with whom you can “be the church” with. That is awesome. It is my prayer that you will forever find your joy, peace, and freedom in Christ and that you’ll consistently be in fellowing with other believers in Christ who do the same!

Cliff…I found your network when searching for help with our homeschooling podcast. One thing lead to another and I ended up on this episode.
Just about everything in this episode touched on something in a very similar parallel life. I was judged for stepping down from the eldership in a reformed family-integrated homeschool family church. I was judged for engaging culture. My wife was judged for creating online blogging/podcasting/social media relationships that “weren’t real.”
It wasn’t until we woke up from our “gospel amnesia” and rediscovered our freedom in Christ!
Years of telling others not to find their hope, security, value or acceptance in the things of the world, while all along I was looking for mine in religion! Similar story, only it was the book “Jesus Plus Nothing Equals Everything” by Tullian Tchividjian (I’ve given away a ton of copies!) that helped me wake up.
Anyhow. Thanks for the great podcast! The gospel is scandalous!

  • HomeschoolIRL I’ve heard good things about the book Jesus Plus Nothing Equals Everything.   I’m so thankful to hear that you discovered your freedom in Christ!  I pray for many blessings for you and your family.
