Sorry it took me so long to put this up. Immediately after watching the show I had to google Jeremy Bentham. Surely the name came from somewhere...

see the link for more info about the philosopher:

It's already been noted that (the real) Bentham was influence by (the real) John Locke.  However, the page notes that he was also influence by David Hume, a guy who's last name sounds vaguely familiar. Wink

How about the part about his preserved dead body he called his "auto-icon". His dead body was present at meetings in this preserved form. He was "present but not voting". Sounds like the same idea as the dead John Locke returning to the island for some unknown reason.

Sorry if it's been posted already.

Oh, now that really makes sense.  I was having trouble understanding what Bentham's ideas had to do with John.  Though he wasn't as bad as Jack, John could still be a bit of a dictator at times whereas Bentham was very liberal.  But that auto icon thing is something they definitely have in common.  Very funny on the part of the writers.  Grin

Benjamin Franklin because they look so much alike.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_franklin

I wonder if Benjamin Linus' middle name is Franklin.  Wouldn't it be wild if John Locke ends up being the son of Ben and Annie?  We think his father is Anthony Cooper, but nothing is what in seems on Lost
