How Many Of These Do I Need See Before It Sinks In?

Folks, I have to admit that I driven my car while reading a text message or email. I’ve even sent tweets while I drive. I’ve never felt as though I’ve been in any danger while doing so. However, I see videos like these and it causes me to think. Wow! I really should stop looking at my phone while I drive. Part of me thinks, I’ve got a lot of experience under my belt. I have a pretty good feel for where my car is and what is going on around me as bring my phone up to a certain spot as I’m driving down the road. I don’t feel I ever give my phone more attention than I ever did when I used to change the car radio station or to quickly glance down at the clock to see what time it was while driving.

The thing is that I know I wouldn’t want my children to do this when they start driving. The deal is that I am setting an example for my children, and I’m not sure I want to send the message of “Do what I say, not as I do here.” Who knows, perhaps today will be the day that I decide to no longer glance at any sort of messages on my phone while my vehicle is moving. I wonder if either of the following two videos impact you the way they do me.

WARNING: While the following video is a “produced fictional account” the video is very GRAPHIC IN NATURE. I would avoid watching the following video with young children around!!!

Yes have to be honest and say I have texted ot used my phone in the car in the past. But now I never do. Hands free kits save a great deal of the distraction. If you are expecting a very important text message to arrive then pull over, use the phones text to speech function or simply wait till your at the lights. In Australia even if your at a standstill at lights it's illegal to use your mobile while your behind the wheel.

It must be said that texting is not the only SILLY thing people do in cars. In the morning drive to my place of work I constantly, every, every morning see women who have just dropped the kids to school, or just left for work...looking in the rear view mirror while fixing hair, doing makeup like lipstick, placing in hair bands, touching up foundation the list goes on, they tend to have smaller cars with very tight circle reactive steering as a result they constantly move from one side if the lane to the other...it scares the he'll out of me being behind them and seeing the lack of car control that they can't see! This 'preening' process takes far more time and attention than texting, at times vie seen it go on for minutes at a time, even doing eye lashes! So please ladies take this activity into consideration also. You look pretty as you are, far more so than after an accident I can assure you.

Blessings Cliff.

I would not be worried about myself, but rather the children crossing the street and not looking. I have seen it so many times kids getting hit because the driver was looking in the mirror to see if anyone was coming. Because I have personally been hit by a car by someone who was on his mobile (I was on the zebra-crossing). I just do not understand what could possibly be so important that you (everyone) have to use the phone while driving. If it really is necessary, then just pull over. My 2 year old niece nearly get hit by someone on his phone last week when he was aiming for the parking spot, not realizing my sister was unloading the car. Just a few seconds, if that, and it can end badly. No doubt if anything had happened, I would have asked him why the hell he was not paying any attention. Ask yourself this, would you feel comfortable as a passenger on a 747 where the pilot is texting someone while descending for landing? Maybe a different senario, but never the less, you get my drift.

Have a safe trip Cliff, hope to see you soon in 2011.
