Welcome To The Help I Got A Mac Podcast!

Help I Got A Mac PodcastThe Help I Got A Mac podcast was originally launched after I, Cliff Ravenscraft, purchased my very first Apple/Mac computer. I recall my initial excitement about owning a Mac wearing off after about two weeks. I had become quite frustrated with how the Mac OS differed from the Windows OS. I needed help and that’s why I launched this show and titled it, “Help I Got A Mac!”

In the Fall of 2007, I met Chris Beiting, a former Apple Store Genius who came to my rescue with a willingness to answer any and all my Mac related questions. I invited him to join me me on a weekly basis and we have now provided more than 100 hours of content devoted to helping the brand new Mac Switcher and discussing all things Apple, including Macs, iPhones, iPods, iPads, and iEverything Else.

In September 2011, Chris was preparing to become a father for the very first time. After 179 episodes, we made the difficult decision to stop the weekly production of this show.

Here’s the deal, Chris and I may randomly produce and episode here and there to discuss major Apple related announcements. It is for this reason that I will leave the subscription links below. I will do my best to also promote these random episodes through the social networks and on our mailing list.

If you like this show, you may also like the Podcast Answer Man, Social Media Serenity, and Business Tech Weekly podcasts. Of course we invite you to please check out the complete list of our podcasts.

In this episode, Cliff and Chris discuss their thoughts on the new Apple announcement of the iPad 2. Also, Chris shares some more insights related to Thunderbolt. We also talked about which Mac computer a brand new Mac user should choice. Cliff things the iMac is the best first Mac option. Chris feels that the MacBook Pro is the best first Mac option. Cliff shares that he thinks the MacBook Air may not be the best first entry point into the Mac platform because it doesn’t have much hard drive space, it does not have an optical drive, and the MacBook Air is designed for extreme portability and doesn’t really provide the full bodied experience that a more powerful Mac would provide.

In this episode of Help I Got A Mac, I was joined by my brother, Parker J., who is our new gspn.tv intern. Chris was unable to join me for this episode. I’m working on a way to keep Help I Got A Mac going with Chris as our co-host.

This week we talk about the pre-orders for the Verizon iPhone and reports that some people may be eligible for attractive trade-ins of the AT&T iPhones.

It seems that there may be a product refresh coming for the 15” and 17” MacBook Pro line as supplies have been running low in stores and with 3rd party vendors.

We also shared that AT&T may be offering Unlimited Data to keep some iPhone customers from defecting to Verizon.

I give my full initial reaction to the 11” MacBook Air and share how my recent Mac App Store purchase did not go as I had anticipated.

Murray called in to tell us about an update to the Keynote App for the iPad and John called in with a review on the Energizer, Energy To Go Case.

Cliff & Chris,
Just wanted to update you and let you know that I ordered my Mac yesterday – I got the Macbook Pro 13 inch, with the 500gb harddrive. I also got the one on one service from Apple. I’m just waiting for it to arrive – late this week or early next week. Thanks for the help.

Oh, also Apple offers quite a few workshops for free at the Apple store, I attended the “Why You’ll Love A Mac” and any doubts I had about getting it quickly melted away. Anyone thinking about getting a Mac product should take a look on the website and see if they have a workshop. But they should probably make sure they can afford whatever they’re going for a workshop for, I have not doubt they’ll get sucked in.

Crissy from Long Island.

iPad Mute Button:

My thoughts on Apple news about the new MacBook Air Storage on SSD. 2nd Gen iPads, iPhone 5, & iPod Touch models should have SSD at least 128+ gigs. I shouldn’t have to decide what I want to take with me. I need the storage space of a iPod Classic but want the apps and features of an iPod Touch. I have a 60 gig iPod 5th gen full of just music, podcasts, and audio books, no room for the videos/tv eps/movies much less books & apps. Until we can stream our personal libraries (of music, videos, books) to our devices anywhere we have to have on-board storage. If you can fit 256 Gigs in .68 inches you should be able to fit in any of the iOS devices.

BlueHost CEO Says Bye Bye To Microsoft:
About 4 years ago I switched all my desktop use to Mac OSX. I love it. And although I believe it is superior to Windows in almost every way (Especially the MACH Kernel) I didn’t really care what we used at Bluehost/Hostmonster/Fastdomain for our office/support computers.

Those days of ignorant bliss are now totally gone. We literally can no longer tolerate Windows in our corporate network. What you say? I know this sounds strange as corporate America is a stalwart Windows using market, but I’ll say it again. We can’t tolerate Windows anymore. It is simply too high a risk. It is UNSECURABLE.

Now I know right now that there are going to be lots of readers that write back saying, “If you know what you are doing then Windows is easy to secure. Only people that aren’t technical enough to do things right get infected.” Uh huh. There are so many zero day vulnerabilities with Windows that I simply can’t keep our network secure. In addition, because of the type of business we are in we are constantly the target of malicious activity directed at our network. We have to protect ourselves, and running Windows feels like bringing a plastic knife to gun fight when it comes to security.

I’m not saying Linux, and Mac OSX aren’t susceptible to viruses or malware, but its so much less that its not even close. Its strange to me that most businesses just accept the fact that their machines will be infected with Malware and that they will just clean it off with the latest scan of their computer. Are you ok with your passwords, personal data, and financial information just flowing out to owners of various botnets? Are you fine to have an army of your office machines sending out spam in the background all day long while you wonder why your internet connection is slow? Clearly the answer for most businesses is yes. I guess after 20 years of Microsoft usage most people are just beaten into submission that computing has to be this way – but it doesn’t have to be. There are alternatives, and we are using them. I hope many of you reading today will consider some of the alternatives.Matt Heaton

140 Help I Got A Mac – New Mac User Thoughts

by Cliff Ravenscraft on October 14, 2010

in Help, iGot a Mac!

This is a Plus Member Episode.

Crissy Needs A Mac:
Crissy is finally sick and tired of Windows and ready to make the switch to Mac. We give her some advice based upon what she is looking for.

Next Apple Event Goes “Back to the Mac”
Following recent events focused on iOS, the iPhone and the iPod and iTunes, Apple’s next media event will shift its focus “Back to the Mac.”The event will be held on October 20, 2010 in Cupertino. As you can see from the invitation, not only does it look like new laptops might be announced at the event (hence the aluminum looking facade), but we might just get a preview of the next version of Mac OS X.

Sparrow Google Mail App:
Cliff learned about Sparrow Google Mail App from Erik Fisher. This is a desktop mail client for the Mac. Using web based mail was a bit of a pain when you simply wanted to click on an email hyperlink only to have it pull up the default Apple mail client that had never been configured. Setting up Sparrow is a total breeze and it supports multiple Google Email Accounts.
http://sparrowmailapp.com

Chris added a note about the Mailplane App.
http://mailplaneapp.com/

PlainText App:
Another application that Erik Fisher told Cliff about was the PlainText DropBox text editor application for the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. Cliff explains why this is so cool.

Windows Phone 7 Syncing for Mac Coming Later This Year

John Asks For Thoughts On Set Top Boxes:
We answer the question as to whether or not we will be getting an Apple TV at $99.

In this episode, Cliff rants about how he thought for sure that Apple’s Pages users would not be plagued by the same backwards compatability issues as MS Word Users. However, this week, when a client sent Cliff a document, he received a warning messaging saying “You need a newer version of Pages to view this document.” To make things worse, he was able to open in preview and then do a screen cap to get the important information he needed.

Cliff and Chris discussed the new announcement made by RIM about the Blackberry Playbook. Until we see this in action, we put this in the vaporware category along with all the other tablet computers that have been talked about so much, but never seen in the wild.

We also talked about the fact that the Apple TV is apparently jail breakable, it contains 8 gigs of memory, and can run apps if Apple (or the Jailbroken Community) decides to flip the switch to make it a reality.

In this episode, Cliff and Chris talk about the latest updates to iWork for the iPad. Numbers, now at version 1.2, introduces improved exports, object grouping and ungrouping, and better hyperlinks, among other new features. The third member of the iWork family, Keynote, has added new animations, the ability to group and animate objects, and export to PowerPoint.

Google Voice apps are now back in the App Store. We recommend GV Mobile +.
